Elm Creek 40 – Southern Valley 43

D1-9 at Minden

Clint Gardels had 13 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots and Michael Nelson scored 13 to lead Wilcox-Hidlreth in the semifinals of the D1-9 Subdistrict. Blaine Groothuis made 8 points, Clay Blank added 7 points, and Stuart Fritz scored 6 for the Falcons. Kenesaw won the game, 62-50. Wilcox-Hildreth finishes the season with an 8-13 record.

Clint Bentley scored 14 points and had 9 rebounds to lead Amherst to a 41-34 D1-9 semifinal win over Litchfield. Helping Bentley in the win were Dominic Abbott with 8 points, Clayton Preble with 7 points, and Dillon Halligan with 5. The Broncos advance to play against Kenesaw on Feb. 23, at 7:00 PM.

D1-10 at McCook

In the semifinals against Overton, Travis Hodgson scored 31 points, Shad Wellmann and Jonathan Weber both had 10 points, and Kolden Hackbart added 8 points for Elwood. D0wn 43-24 at the half, the Pirates made a run in the fourth, outscoring the Eagles, 23-17. Overton was able to hold off Elwood for the win, 73-61. Overton advances to play Arapahoe. Elwood ends the season at 13-8.

D2-8 at Kearney Catholic HS

Loomis was up 19-13 at halftime over Axtell and went on for the 45-29 D2-8 semifinal win. Kalen Anderson had 13 points, Clay McNall and Shane Sundquist each scored 12 points to lead the Wolves to the victory. For the Wildcats, Jordan Miller scored 13 points, Brandon Benson and Brandt Runge both scored 5 points. Loomis advances to take on Bertrand on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7:00 PM.

Caleb Pritchard scored 16 points to lead Pleasanton in the D2-8 semifinal game against Bertrand. Derrick Tolles made 9 points, and both Austin Paitz and Clay Weber scored 6 points for the Bulldogs. Betrand won 53-47.

D2-9 at Cozad

Hunter Johnson led Eustis-Faranam with 13 points in the semifinal game against Brady in the D1-9 Subdistrict at Cozad. Jordan Wetovick scored 6 points and had 4 rebounds, Dustin Koch made 5 points, and Austin Boller had 3 points and 8 rebounds. Brady won 69-33.

Boys Subdistrict Basketball – 1st Round Results

D2-8 at Kearney Catholic

Axtell led 47-37 at the end of the third period and was up as much as 12 points early in the fourth. Arcadia caught up to the Wildcats and went ahead one point in the final minutes. Dalton Bergstrom made a shot for two to retake the lead. The Huskies stole the ball and passed downcourt for a basket to go up by one point. Brandon Benson made the final score of the game with about one minute left for the D2-8 Subdistrict first round win. Axtell moves into the semifinals against Loomis, Feb. 21, at 6 PM at Kearney Catholic High School.

D1-9 at Minden

Clint Gardels scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Wilcox-Hildreth to a 45-30 win over Franklin in D1-9 Subdistrict action. Helping the Falcons to the win were Blaine Groothuis with 8 points and Clay Blank and Shane Farley each with 6 points. Wilcox-Hidlreth advances to the semifinals against Kenesaw at 6:00 PM in Minden.

D1-10 at McCook

Travis Hodgson scored 42 points and had 9 rebounds in a71-61 win for Elwood in the first round of the D1-10 Boys Basketball Subdistrict against Hitchcock County. Hodgson shot 10-11 at the line. Kolden Hackbart scored 10 points, for the Pirates, Jonathan Weber made 7 points, and Spencer Gydesen and Shad Wellmann each scored 6 points. Weber pulled down 11 boards. Elwood  moves on to play Overton in the next round.

Amherst Wins 2012 Class D Wrestling Title

Amherst won the Nebraska Class D Wrestling Championship with 187.5 points and two individual champions, ahead of runner-up Pender with 164 points. The Broncos took 10 wrestlers to the state tournament and brought home 9 medals. In the championship finals, Tanner Taubenhiem, 138, and Wyatt Schake, 160, won their individual championship matches for first place. Mason Klingelhoefer, 126, and Stuart Hircock, 170, finished their championship finals matches with second place medals.

Tanner Taubenheim won the  Class D 138 championship with a 12-5 decision over Cale Bolton, High Plains. Taubenhiem  finished the 2012 season undefeated, 52-0,

Wyatt Schake, 49-1, won the Class D 160 championship  pinned Forrest Jones, Winside in a time of 3:02.

Amherst came away with five wrestlers earning medals in the consolation finals, Logan Dibbern, D120, and Kalen Pfieffer, D220, winning third place medals, Devin Dibbern, D132, placing 4th, and Bryan Wietes, 106, and Brandt Florell, 133, finishing in fifth place. With the strong showing in the consolation finals, Amherst passed Pender in team scoring and put the title out of the reach of the Pendragons.

Elm Creek’s Dalton Meier won the Class D 195 championship match over Jordan Russell, Garden County, with a 3-2 decision.

2012 State Wrestling Day 2 Results

In Class D, Amherst remains in first place with 143.5 points with 4 wrestlers going on to the championship finals. Pender sits in second place with 142 points. The Broncos also have 5 wrestlers in the consolation bracket. Saturday’s wrestling starts with the consolation semifinals where the winners vie for third place and the losers of the semis wrestle for 5th place. Elm Creek has one wrestler remaining in the championship bracket. Elwood, Overton, and Pleasanton each have one wrestler in the consolations. SEM has two wrestlers in the consolations.

2012 State Wrestling Tournament – Day 1 Results

In Class D, Amherst is in first place with 74.5 points, ahead of second place Pender with 69 points. Amherst has 6 wrestlers moving on to the semifinals in the championship bracket. Pender also has 6 in the semifinals. Logan Dibbern meets up with a Pender wrestler in the next round. The Broncos have four in the consolation bracket and Pender has three in consolations. With two rounds of wrestling complete the opening day, Friday opens with the consolation first round and then the second round matches. The championship semifinals follow, then the consolation quarterfinals.
